What is Blind Dog Bikes?
First and foremost, Blind Dog Bikes is a journey. Also, I make bicycles and some sweet parts for em. Well… I will.
Blind Dog Bikes was conceptualized during and made possible by the routine off-season winters I experience as a tree planter in British Columbia. Falling back in love with riding a bicycle just for the joy of it was a healing experience during a time when I would often be searching for something to do, awaiting the work that’s kept me busy and happy for so long.
I’ve loved my work and the opportunities it’s afforded me for the last decade, but like most treeplanters I’ve been using it to bide my time and figure out what else I want to do. I’ve dabbled in many creative alleys, and never been afraid to get to work, but never felt like I found the one.
The idea of entering the framebuilding space came to me through a binge of Paul Brodie and Cobra Framebuilding videos on YouTube (Thank you) and it felt like the intersection of all that I’ve wanted to be doing in my shop.
As a result, this is where I’ve decided to dig in. Full send energy and a commitment to becoming more, doing more and creating more. Watch this space, Blind Dog Bikes is about to crack off!
Why Blind Dog Bikes?
In October 2024 my partner and I adopted the puppy we’d been waiting for from the SPCA. She checked all our boxes and more. We immediately fell in love and brought her home, we named her Honey Ham. Honey was a perfectly normal, healthy appearing puppy.
Now, just two years later Honey Ham has gone completely blind, deaf and lost every tooth in her mouth. If you ask her, that just how life goes and she’s happy to be here either way. She’s our namesake and a part of our inspiration. Do it fearlessly, trust in your instinct and push yourself. Honey Ham does it every day.
Like a good bike, Honey Ham is infallibly and unstoppably ready for anything. The ultimate companion to your everyday.
Honey Ham comes to work with us everyday, deep into the far hills and cutblocks of British Columbia. She doesn’t complain, but I know she wishes work was a backyard fab shop with a cozy bed by the heater. I promise to her we’ll make that happen soon.
